About the Illustrator
“Katie Melrose was born and raised in Southern California and studied illustration at California State University, Fullerton. Growing up, she spent a lot of time camping and backpacking all over California and has seen almost all of it’s beautiful coasts and national parks. Her love for art was cultivated the moment she could hold a pencil. She has always drawn much inspiration from the great outdoors, and hopes to visit every state in the US someday--she’s nearly halfway there!”

About the Author
“When we conceive and write a book together, we choose an author name that references our little red bird mascot. For this book’s red bird name, we reached deep into American history for Cholena Rose Dare. Cholena is a Native American word for “bird.” Rose is our country’s national flower. And Dare is the last name of the first child born to colonists in 1587.
While Cholena Rose Dare may be a made-up name, she is a very real group of people who believe families should spend quality time learning about America and celebrating it’s strengths.
When she’s not wandering museums or creating children’s books, Cholena Rose Dare loves watching baseball, baking apple pies, and stitching gifts for friends.”
